A Polish degree is a real path to a residence card, and lets you work while you study. It is also more expensive and slower to a settled status than a job offer, and it now comes with real fraud risk. Checked against gov.pl, study.gov.pl and university sources, September 2026.
What happens
You apply directly through each university's own online system (called IRK), get an admission letter, pay tuition, then apply for a national (type D) student visa at your Polish consulate. After you arrive, you file for a residence permit for studies.
Why it can work for you
Full-time students at a Polish institution can work without a separate work permit while they study, and the first residence permit for studies lasts 15 months. It also does not need a job offer up front.
How long it takes
Universities recruit on two intakes: the main one for October, with deadlines typically May to July, and a smaller one for February or March, with deadlines typically December to January. Visa processing then commonly takes 4 to 8 weeks.
What it costs
Tuition for English-taught programmes typically runs EUR 2,000 to 6,000 a year at a public university, more for medicine, dentistry or an MBA. Most consulates want proof the full first year is paid before they grant the visa, plus health insurance of at least EUR 30,000 and proof of accommodation.
The two mistakes to avoid
- Paying an 'agent' for a guaranteed admission letter outside the university's own IRK system: real prosecutions in 2025 charged 12 people for selling over 1,000 fake admission documents to applicants from about 20 countries, India and Bangladesh among them
- Assuming any private language-course or part-time programme gives you the right to work without a permit: it does not, only full-time students at a recognised institution qualify

The case for it
- No job offer needed to start the process
- Free access to the job market while you study full-time, from day one, without being tied to one named employer
- A real Polish degree, and English-taught programmes are widely available
- After graduating, a free 9-month permit to look for work or start a business, or straight into a job with no work-permit paperwork at all
The case against it
- You usually pay the full first year of tuition before the visa is even granted, and it is normally not refundable if the visa is refused
- Around 4 in 10 student-visa applications were refused in 2024: a real risk to plan for financially
- Time spent studying counts only at half value toward the 5 years needed for EU long-term residence, so it is a slower path than a work permit if your main goal is a permanent status
- An active fraud crackdown targets fake admission letters sold outside universities' own application systems: the choice of school and any 'agent' is the single highest-risk decision in this route

A full-time (stacjonarne) student at a Polish university can work without a separate work permit for the whole time they are enrolled, at any level including a doctoral school.

From 1 July 2026, this free right to work applies only if the institution is on the Ministry of Interior's approved list, or is a public university (which is exempt from needing separate approval). Ask the university directly if you are unsure.

No official weekly hour cap was found for full-time students, unlike many other EU countries' 20-hours-a-week rule during term. Treat this carefully and check with the university or your local office rather than assuming an unlimited right, since this point is not confirmed by a primary legal source.
